My Role Essay

Final Project for Mr. Keane
250 Word Essay: My Role

For a final project Hannah Blanchard, Darien Demers, and I made a mural displaying three of Mr. Keane’s favorite quotes from three of six works treated in the course. I interviewed Mr. Keane on his favorite quotes from The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now, and Hamlet. Mr. Keane’s favorite quotes from said works are “…and coming to my room I saw for the first time, the appearance of Edward Hyde.” –Dr. Jekyll, the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, “The heads, you’re looking at the heads. Sometimes he goes too far.” –Photographer, Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now and “The rest is silence.” –Hamlet, Shakespeare.  My main role was to sketch out the quotes on the blank black mural in chalk in the fonts our group decided on and paint the pictures we chose to illustrate each quote. During the first few days of the project my architecture and engineering experience came in handy when I needed to map out where the border of the mural would be so that the quotes would fit, along with the illustrations, and making level lines to write the three quotes on. It took about a day to make each quote look the way they were supposed to and fit on the mural so that everything would be pleasing to the eye. It took me two days to complete “the heads” and two days to complete the screaming face. The image of the candle being blown out is my personal favorite because it took more creativity to come up with an image to correlate with “The rest is silence.” than the other quotes and I also think it is a good way to “end” the mural in that a candle being blown out can be a symbol for death, or the end of an era or idea which, in a way, brings the whole mural together.

50- word reflection

Topic: Mrs.Hall Interview-Heart of Darkness

Interviewing Mrs. Hall about Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad made me want to reread the book because she made me understand that it takes a hungry mind to appreciate how the book makes you think about things that you wouldn’t normally. In the future I will prepare a question that is clearer so that the conversation will be more easily understood.
